It is said that peppermint essential oil, when used in an oil burner, not only keeps mosquitoes and other insects away, but is also therapeutic and may help alleviate some of the effects of conditions such as asthma, colic, fever, flatulence, headache, nausea, chest congestion, and vertigo. This oil is believed to be excellent for mental fatigue and depression, and refreshing and stimulating due to its menthol content.

Peppermint is native to the Mediterranean, but is now cultivated in other countries in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Findings show that peppermint has been used since ancient times in Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, and Japan. According to Greek mythology, a nymph named Mentha was transformed into a peppermint plant in a fit of rage by the wife of her lover, Persephone. According to Pliny, peppermint was used to crown the Greeks and Romans during feasts. It has been used for medicinal purposes in England for the past few centuries.
